Bidding & Auctions

HelmKeep offers several ways to distribute tasks competitively, making chore assignment more engaging and fair.

Standard Bidding

When bidding is enabled on a task, members compete by bidding the price down. The member willing to do the task for the lowest reward wins. Bidding features include:

  • Duration-based deadlines: Set bidding to last 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, or 1 week
  • Buy-it-now price: An optional instant-claim price — any member can skip the bidding and claim the task immediately at this price
  • Bid direction: Configure whether bids go down (reverse auction) or up
  • Withdraw bids: Members can withdraw their bids before the deadline

When the deadline expires, the lowest bidder wins and is assigned the task at their bid price.

Sealed Bid Auctions

Sealed bid auctions (TOKEN mode) are in-person auction events. Each participant secretly submits a bid without seeing other bids. When all bids are in, they are revealed simultaneously and the lowest bidder wins the task.

Note: Sealed bid auctions are ideal for family meetings where you want a fair, no-influence bidding process.

Live Reverse Auctions

Live reverse auctions (LIVE_REVERSE mode) are real-time, game-show style events. The price starts high and drops with each bid. Features include:

  • Real-time countdown timer
  • Price decreases with each new bid
  • When the timer expires, the current lowest bidder wins

These auctions are designed for fun, in-person task distribution sessions where the household gathers to assign chores.
